Frequently Asked Questions...

Winter sunrise from Criccieth Castle

First things first... How to say Criccieth?
Criccieth is simply pronounced Crick--keyeth
It is also more colloquially pronounced as Crick-Yeth

What does the word Criccieth mean?
The original name and meaning is lost in the mists of time, however, some believe it is a corrupted form of Craig Câs which means "Heather Rock" in Welsh. If only the true meaning could be established, there would be less controversy as to how to spell the word! Criccieth or Cricieth?

Yes, why is Criccieth sometimes spelled "Cricieth"?
The local-colloquial pronunciation as above, demands a single letter C in the middle, whereas the official spelling of "Criccieth" reflects the historically correct pronunciation adopted by the authorities. Welsh is a phonetic language, as this little dilemma illustrates.

Is that why Criccieth signs have been vandalised?
Yes, Criccieth (with two Cs in the middle) offends those who say there is no such double letter combination in the Welsh language. The issue has been politicised by a radical minority who disregard local custom.

Sign posts, street maps and addresses
Many street names in Criccieth are not truly bilingual, but have an English and a Welsh version. For example Marine Terrace is shown as
Min-y-Môr on the tourist map. Confusion increases on the ground because the council have incorrectly sign-posted Marine Crescent as Min-y-Môr! Castle Square is sign-posted as Y Dref (= the town) although it is not the centre of commercial life. Please see the bilingual list of street names on this site for further examples.

What is the population of Criccieth?
The population is just under 2,000. CTIS is awaiting the confirmation of the 2001 census figures.

When is Criccieth Fair held?
The traditional dates for both Criccieth Fair Days are May 23rd and June 29th each year. This only changes should they fall on a Sunday, in which case the Fair Day is then moved to either the next day (Monday) or the previous day (Saturday) as decided by the Council. Market trading only takes place on the Fair days themselves, but the Fun Fair extends over a couple of days.
