Criccieth: A micro-climate

Winter sunrise over the Cambrian Moutains

"The sun is always shining in Criccieth!"
Although those who look across the bay may claim that more often than is strictly true, most agree that Criccieth enjoys a little micro-climate of its own.

Facing the Sun
Criccieth also faces south, so even in mid winter from sunrise top left to sunset left it enjoys a very sunny aspect.

Temperate Maritime Climate
thanks to the influence of the warm Gulf Stream sweeping up the Irish Sea from the faraway Caribbean across the Atlantic Ocean, so of course it does rain! But the rainfall is lower in Criccieth than in the mountains beyond. Indeed, the sun has often been shining in Criccieth on days when Capel Curig has reported the highest rainfall for the whole of Britain!

"Red Sky at Night, Sailors' Delight"

Or is that 'Shepherds' Delight'?

Sorry, that rhetorical question is just an excuse to include this rather splendid photograph taken at sunset, showing Criccieth Castle in silhouette.

Marine Crescent in the snow

Winter Wonderland?
Hardly! Frost and snow are very rare in Criccieth, even when the Snowdon Range & the Cambrian Mountains are topped with snow. The last "serious" fall of about six inches (15 cm) of snow in Criccieth, was back in 1984 or 1985.

Left Marine Crescent in a light dusting of snow, which soon thawed in the warm winter sunshine.

This gentle climate is reflected in the flora & fauna of
Criccieth and the surrounding countryside...
