Criccieth really is...
Blooming Lovely!

The 'Oxenbould Daisy'

The joys of a mild, temperate climate
A luscious, green countryside with many delicate species growing quite wild, makes Criccieth a delightful place to visit at any time of year.

However, May must be the most magical time, when the many Azaleas and Rhododendrons are in full bloom, not just the despised
rhododendron ponticus (below).

rhododendron ponticus

It is really blooming lovely in Criccieth for many months of the year, starting with snowdrops in early January through to the last of the flowering roses at Christmas.

The first Camillia flowers of the year sometimes grace Christmas tables, the Magnolias are usually out by Easter and lawns have to be mown all year round!

Kissing Time: hill side of gorse looking towards Snowdonia from Criccieth

When the yellow gorse or furse is in flower it is 'Kissing Time' in Wales!

But not to worry... This prickly little character is in flower all year round, so it is quite acceptable to be amorous at any time!

However it is not just Nature alone which blesses us with living beauty...

Criccieth in Bloom
This initiative by local residents creates prize-winning displays of flowers which make a very colourful splash in all sorts of unexpected nooks and crannies around the town. Criccieth has also taken part in the "Wales in Bloom" competition in recent years and has already been quite successful its category.

Daffodils

From the daffodils in full flower for St. David's Day on March 1st to the hanging baskets along the High Street or boats full of flowers dotted around town throughout the summer, a small army of volunteers work hard to keep Criccieth looking its best for everyone to enjoy.

Horticultural footnote:
There is one plant which attracts a great deal of attention when in full flower...

First introduced to Britain from South Africa by a Mr. Oxenbould, who lived at 3 Marine Crescent, it grows profusely in Criccieth.

With a scientific handle
Lampranthus roseus or Lampanthus multiradiatus and a simple Latin name of Mesembryanthemum roseum it is hardly surprising we call it simply "The Oxenbould Daisy" locally!

The current owners of Mr. Oxenbould's old home have encouraged it to grow over their wall, where it forms astonishing cushions of vivid puce flowers. It certainly is an unexpected surprise for visitors to Criccieth, although it sadly looks a bit of a mess when the flowers die down in late summer.
